Prof Dr Gert de Roo (1963) is full professor in Spatial Planning and Head of the Department of Spatial Planning and Environment at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen. He is currently President of the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP). His research focuses on non-linear development of urban space and place, the development of decision-making models supporting choices concerning interventions within the urban environment, relating complexity thinking and planning theory, and managing transitions of space. His books on complexity and planning, are titled “A Planner’s Encounter with Complexity” (2010), and “Planning & Complexity: Systems, Assemblages and Simulations” (2012). De Roo participates in various national and international associations and organisations, all of them having in common the physical environment, quality of life, sustainability and urban development. Among others, he has been co-chair of the International Urban Planning and Environment Association (UPE), is editor of the Ashgate Publishing Series on Urban Planning and Environment and the Ashgate Publishing Series on Planning Theory. De Roo is also Visiting Professor at Newcastle University.
