Theme of conference

   The theme of the conference is “Urban China Studies in a New Era”.China has entered a new era that is characterized by efforts to realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation and to achieve balanced development and reduced inequality.  This new era presents exciting new opportunities for China’s path toward urbanization, along with formidable challenges.  For example, the new era might facilitate the leveraging of technology to develop sustainable urbanization and design smart cities that can minimize problems associated with fast paced urbanization often observed in developing countries.  The national rejuvenation is also intended to provide the opportunity for millions of rural migrants and their children to realize their urban dreams in China.  Since 2014, China has been implementing the ambitious “2014-2020 Urbanization Blueprint”, which promises to give urban hukou to 100 million people by 2020.   Although these scenarios are very attractive, the realities are often much more complicated, and successes may be difficult to achieve. Thus, the timing is right for urban China scholars to explore both theoretically and empirically intriguing issues/questions for China’s path toward the next stage of urbanization.  The conference would welcome papers from all social science perspectives including sociology, anthropology, economics, demography, geography, history, management, political science, public policy, urban planning and design, and urban studies.  We particularly encourage papers on the following topics (but other topics will also be considered):

  •  Smart cities;
